Vapi pricing: what a minute really costs.

What one minute is made of

Vapi's headline price covers its own platform only. Every call also pays a transcriber (speech to text), a language model, a voice (text to speech) and usually a phone line, each at the provider's own price with no markup. Three real configurations, priced from each provider's pricing page on 19 October 2026:

Vapi transcribes both the caller and the assistant, so transcription is counted twice per call minute. We assumed the agent speaks about 450 characters a minute, and the model reads 15,000 tokens a minute with half of them cached (Vapi's own assumption) and writes 150. Deepgram's multilingual rate in the Typical column is a limited-time promotion; its list price is in the High column.

Our own three-language phone assistant (Arabic, English and French, with ElevenLabs voices and Twilio numbers) showed about $0.20 a minute in Vapi's cost estimate. Multilingual transcription and premium voices are what push a build above the typical column, so price your languages before you price your volume.

Packages: how many calls at once

From vapi.ai/pricing on 19 October 2026. An extra simultaneous call costs $10 a month, an extra organization $20, and HIPAA $2,000 a month per organization. Accounts on Vapi's older pricing keep their existing limits.

Pro only pays at very large volumes. 10% of a $0.05 fee is half a cent a minute, so you pay the $999 minimum until you pass about 200,000 minutes a month. Below that, Core plus extra lines at $10 each is far cheaper: 30 calls at once comes to $229 a month that way.

What a month costs

At $0.092 a minute. A three-language build with premium voices runs closer to $0.20 a minute.

For most small businesses the AI phone bill lands between $200 and $500 a month, against $3,000 to $5,000 a month for one human receptionist. What it costs to set up depends on the build; the running cost is mostly minutes.

What catches people out

• The $0.05 is not the price of a minute. Transcription, the model, the voice and the phone line add $0.01 to $0.09 on top.
• A new account handles 4 calls at once. A fifth caller at the same moment needs Core (10 calls) or an extra line at $10 a month.
• The free Vapi number takes incoming calls only, uses US area codes only, cannot run outbound campaigns and cannot be moved to another carrier. For anything else, import a Twilio, Telnyx or Vonage number.
• At $0 credit with auto-reload off, Vapi freezes the account and new calls cannot start. Turn auto-reload on before you go live.
• HIPAA costs $2,000 a month per organization: at 5,000 minutes a month, that adds $0.40 to every minute.
• Vapi's EU region is only available on the custom Premier package.

How to lower the bill

• Bring your own provider keys. Once Vapi validates a key, that provider bills you directly, so your own discounts and credits apply.
• Keep the system prompt short. The model rereads it on every turn, so every extra paragraph is billed again and again.
• Pick the voice for the job. ElevenLabs Flash costs half as much per character as its premium voices.
• Use the free Vapi number for lines that only take incoming calls.
• Use a small model for simple routing and a larger one only where the conversation needs it.

Vapi against Retell

Per minute, Vapi wins for the same providers. Retell includes more simultaneous calls and a free HIPAA agreement, which can make it the cheaper platform overall for a clinic or a busy line.
