CPM calculator: the cost of being seen a thousand times.

CPM is the price of a thousand impressions, the currency of every ad auction. Enter what a campaign cost and how many impressions it bought, and the calculator returns your CPM, the cost of a single impression and how many people $100 reaches at that rate.

Impressions are cheap. Leads are the point.

We run campaigns measured down to the qualified lead, with landing pages, scoring and instant follow-up, so the budget goes where it converts. One event campaign delivered 600+ registrations from $0.57 per lead.

What CPM measures

CPM stands for cost per mille, the cost of one thousand ad impressions. Ad platforms sell attention by auction, and CPM is the clearing price: it goes up when many advertisers want the same audience and down when the platform has more inventory than demand. It is the right metric for comparing the price of reach across platforms, placements and seasons.

What a good CPM looks like

CPMs move with the market, the country, the audience and the time of year: the same campaign costs more in the last quarter than in the first, and more for a narrow retargeting audience than for a broad one. As rough orientation, many social campaigns land between $5 and $20 per thousand, search ads are priced per click rather than per impression, and premium video placements cost more. A low CPM is only good if the impressions reach people who buy.

That is why we never optimise for CPM alone: our event campaign for iGC Africa was judged on registrations, and the ads that delivered leads at $0.57 each were not the ones with the lowest CPM.

Typical CPM by platform

Every platform prices a thousand impressions differently, because each one sells a different audience with a different level of intent. The ranges below are rough orientation for broad targeting in the United States and Western Europe; a narrow B2B audience, a retargeting list or the November peak can double them. Use them to sanity-check a number, not as a target.

PlatformTypical CPMWhat moves it
Google Display$2 to $6Placement quality, audience lists
TikTok$4 to $10Creative freshness, broad audiences run cheapest
Meta (Facebook and Instagram)$6 to $15Audience size, placement mix, seasonality
YouTube in-stream$10 to $20Skippable or not, targeting, video length
LinkedIn$30 to $60 and aboveJob title and company targeting; the audience is expensive because it is precise

Industry changes the picture as much as the platform. Retail and e-commerce campaigns usually sit at the low end of each range, real estate and local services in the middle, and finance, insurance, legal and B2B software at the top, because those advertisers can pay more for each customer and bid the auction up.

CPM to CPC, and back

CPM and CPC describe the same money from two ends, and the click-through rate is the bridge between them. A $10 CPM buys 1,000 impressions; at a 1% click-through rate those become 10 clicks, so each click cost $1. Enter your CTR in the calculator and it shows the implied CPC alongside the CPM, which is the fastest way to compare a platform that bills per impression with one that bills per click.

How to lower it without losing quality

  • Refresh creatives before frequency climbs: a tired ad gets fewer clicks, and platforms charge more to keep showing it.
  • Widen the audience and let the algorithm find buyers, then exclude the segments that click without converting.
  • Test placements: feeds, stories, reels and the audience network are priced differently.
  • Measure downstream with the CPC and cost per lead calculators, because a cheap CPM with no leads is the most expensive kind.

Questions, answered.

What is CPM in advertising?

The cost of 1,000 impressions of an ad. "Mille" is Latin for a thousand. It is how Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn and display networks price reach.

How do I calculate CPM?

Divide the ad cost by the number of impressions and multiply by 1,000. $500 for 50,000 impressions is a $10 CPM.

What is a good CPM?

It depends on the platform, country, audience and season. Many social campaigns see $5 to $20; narrow B2B audiences and premium video cost more. Judge it together with clicks and leads, not on its own.

CPM or CPC: which is better?

They measure different things. CPM prices reach, CPC prices clicks. Awareness campaigns are bought on CPM; campaigns that need action are usually judged on CPC and cost per lead, whatever the billing model.

Why did my CPM go up?

Usually more competition for the same audience (seasonal peaks, a competitor scaling), a narrower audience, ad fatigue, or a creative the platform rates as low quality.

How many impressions does $1,000 buy?

At a $10 CPM, 100,000 impressions; at $25, 40,000. The calculator shows the figure for your own CPM.

How do I convert CPM to CPC?

Divide the CPM by the click-through rate times 1,000, with the CTR as a fraction. A $10 CPM at a 1% CTR is $10 ÷ (0.01 × 1,000) = $1.00 per click. Enter your CTR in the calculator and it does the conversion for you.

What is the average CPM on Facebook and Instagram?

For broad audiences in the United States and Western Europe, roughly $6 to $15 per thousand impressions, higher for narrow or retargeting audiences and in the last quarter of the year. Meta reports your own figure in Ads Manager, and that number matters more than any average.

What is a good CPM on YouTube?

In-stream video commonly runs $10 to $20 per thousand impressions for broad targeting. Skippable formats cost less per impression than non-skippable ones, and a longer video that keeps people watching earns cheaper impressions over time.

Why is LinkedIn CPM so high?

Because the targeting is precise. Paying $40 to reach a thousand finance directors is cheap if two of them become clients, and expensive if the offer is not built for them. Judge LinkedIn on cost per qualified lead, never on CPM.
